CATERPILLAR 336 Failed Floating Face Seal Problems

Failed Floating Face Seal

  • When traction motors on CAT excavators, such as those on a Caterpillar 336 CR, enter the shop for repair or re-manufacturing, the problem is often caused by a leak between the sprocket and the rear of the hydraulic motor. That particular leak is caused by a failed floating face seal, also called a double cone seal or mechanical face seal. This particular seal keeps the gear oil on the planetary side of your transmission. When a face seal fails, two things will happen: (1) gear oil will begin to leak, and (2) contamination will begin to find its way into the planetary hub .
